Fitneff's 2019 Annual Step Challenge!

The start of June may feel like the beginning of summer for most, but for the team at Fitneff, it’s the start of our yearly step challenge! This year is our second annual step challenge within the company, it’s a great way to kick off the warmer weather by trying to integrate more movement. Last year we found the step challenge was a big motivator for us to find creative ways to get more steps and activities into our life. It’s also a fun team building activity! Here are the details of our challenge so that you can create your own within your company or group of friends!

The Challenge

The Challenge is quite simple. It runs for the month of June and the goal is to be the person with the most steps at the end of the month! But the point of the challenge is really for each participant to find new, creative ways to integrate movement into their day. We often go through our day without noticing how many steps we take or where we are making time for activity. This challenge serves as a reminder for us to take movement seriously and that adding in some extra steps isn’t as hard as it may seem.

In 2018 our team got 1,589,945 steps altogether and our office manager, Angelique, won with 427,052 steps. This year our goal to get 2,500,000 steps together as a team!

The Participants

This year we have 5 people from the Fitneff team joining our step challenge. We are a highly competitive group and are all looking forward to having to battle it out for the most steps! Here’s what you need to know about each participant:


This is Matt’s first year joining the step challenge! Matt works remotely from the rest of us in Ontario but that doesn’t slow him down. He showed us just how much of an intense competitor he was on the first day of our step challenge with getting 19,197 steps! IN ONE DAY! How does he do it?


Ron is a busy guy! He is always running from meeting to meeting downtown Calgary and is known to rack up big step days without even trying! His only downfall is that he spends days traveling by car or plane and is forced to sit for long periods of time. But even with his travel days, Ron isn’t known to sit around for long, he always manages to get his steps in when no one is looking!


Angelique is our reigning champ and she is not looking to give up her title this year. She is a serious competitor and a force to be reckoned with. Angelique never lets a day go by during the step challenge where she doesn’t get a minimum of 10,000 steps. This keeps her in the lead most days, will anyone be strong enough to beat her this year?


Greg is new to the Fitneff team this year and will be competing against us for the first time! He didn’t know what he was signing up for when he agreed to join, but now he is proven to be a tough competitor. Greg’s top supporter in this challenge is his dog, Fisher. Fisher is more than happy to help Greg get his steps in every day. We aren’t sure who is walking who, but they are both getting in lots of steps!


Kate (That’s me!) is the runner of the group but has promised to lay off the half-marathons in June. Kate knows the sting of losing to Angelique and she isn’t planning on sitting around to watch her win again. Kate came to play this year; will she finally beat Angelique? Or will our new participants prove to be too much?

The Rules

Each participant can select the activity tracker or their choosing. Some of us are using a Garmin Activity Tracker and some are just using their smartphone. Since we are all using different apps, we have decided to use the app Stridekick to sync all our results together each day. We also create weekly challenges within the app to help motivate us each week. We came up with a few general rules so that everyone stays honest and motivated throughout the challenge:


  1. The Challenge runs from June 1st to June 30th. Only steps taken within this time will be counted.
  2. Everyone must sync their steps daily! Everyone is required to sync at least once every 24 hours, more is always better though!
  3. All steps must be your own! No lending your watch or phone to someone else to earn steps in your name.

We encourage you to start our own step challenge within your workplace or with your friends. Use our rules and guidelines to keep everyone on the same page! This really is a great way to find more ways to increase your activity throughout the day.
