Fitneff Garmin Step Challenge Canada

It’s officially July, and what better time than at the height of summer to start a company-wide step challenge! With the weather warming up and summer activities becoming more popular, we here at Fitneff thought we would take advantage of this trend and start a step challenge to encourage even more movement into our days.

The Challenge

Our employees will be battling it out for the full month of July to see who can rack up the most steps by the end of the four weeks. Each week we’ll complete a running tally of steps so that you can see who’s at the top of the standings (and who needs to pick up the slack!).

The Activity Tracker

In order to accurately track our steps, we’ll be using Garmin Activity Trackers. Rachel, Kate and Angelique chose the Garmin Vivofit 4 activity tracker, while Ron chose the Garmin Vivoki activity tracker (he doesn't like things on his wrist, so this is a great option that can clip onto a belt loop).

These devices have a sleek, subtle design and are water-resistant, meaning you can shower with them on. They are also compatible with the Garmin Connect app so that you can easily track all of your data in one place and share that data with friends! Last but definitely not least, the Vivofit 4 has a battery life of one year and the Vivoki has one of six months, so you don’t have to worry about constantly charging them.

The Participants

In preparation for the month of walking ahead, four of us at Fitneff answered two questions about our goals for the challenge:

 Fitneff Garmin Step Challenge Canada

Q: What are your goals for this upcoming step challenge?

Angelique: My goal for the step challenge is to complete 10,000 steps consistently for the month. I have also been losing weight through diet changes, and I am hoping that adding in more consistent exercise will help me with my weight loss goal.

Ron: I want to be more consistent about tracking steps and activity. Overall, I’m a relatively active person, but I’ve never regularly tracked any active data, so I’m excited to get more diligent about that.

Kate: My goals for the step challenge are to work on consistently meeting 10,000 steps each day, making my days full of movement. Currently I don’t get many steps until the evening and I want to find ways to integrate more movement at the start of my day!

Rachel: My goal for the step challenge is to be more consistent with activity. I know that there are days when I don’t reach the recommended 10,000 steps a day for this reason or that, but I want to change that. I want to make changes to work towards a healthier version of myself.

Q: Looking forward, how do you think keeping track of your steps will affect your movement and motivation?

Angelique: I have kept track of my steps for the past few years, just not consistently. I think the Garmin Vivofit 4 tracker will be helpful with that, especially since I don’t have to charge it every three or four days.

Ron: As I get better at tracking my data with the help of the Garmin, I think I will be more deliberate with my activity in the future. By visually seeing the data build up, I will be motivated to keep moving and keep beating my previous goals.

Kate: I think that keeping track of my steps will remind me to get those extra steps in when I normally wouldn’t think about it. Having a constant reminder on my wrist to move is going to help accomplish my goals and make me healthier overall.

Rachel: I think by having the Garmin and being able to see all of my data in one consolidated place, I will be more motivated to keep moving. Sometimes I feel lazy after a long day of work, but if I see that I don’t have enough steps for the day or that I’m falling behind in the challenge, I’ll be encouraged to build some activity into my evening.
